Autumn is an inspiration for many artists to paint due to the season’s transitionary nature. The
Fall season is symbolic of plenty, ripening, harvest, and abundance, but also a symbol of decay,
decline, old age, and even death. It has associations of things being past their prime. It is also a
time of contemplation and celebration of life in a festival of colour before the long winter
months begin. Through the centuries artists have been inspired by the beauty and melancholy
of autumn.
We all know the main quintessential symbols of the season, and the most classically celebrated
peculiarities of autumn: falling leaves, the strong concentration in nature of browns, golds, and

reddish colours, the abundant wind and rains, and the typical fruits of the season. All these
distinctive elements have been immortalized by the greatest and renowned painters.
For example, Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s first allegorical images of the Four Seasons were
represented by seasonally appropriate fruits, vegetables, and flora. These were commissioned
by Maximillian II in 1563. In some ways these paintings were ahead of their time in the
conceptual aspect of the images.

Other famous artists, who have portrayed autumn include, Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard,

In turn, with the coming of Fall, we feel the need to change our décor to harness and celebrate
this new season of rich colours, plush cushions, cozy firesides, and warmer outerwear. We can
celebrate in our own homes with new paintings and prints to give a room a new look in
welcoming this transitional season. We can harness the last of summer warmth through colour.
At Picture This Gallery we have a large selection of images to choose from to give your home a
renewed, colourful, and autumnal look. Check out  The Great Fall Art Show
