New England Classic
Artwork Description
As we travel away from today’s highways, there are lots of interesting houses to be seen. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors. The rambler house was built as a main place for shelter, food and lodging. As the household grew in number, it often became necessary to add a room or two or more – a kitchen might be added onto the existing structure if the original one had to be used for sleeping quarters. Then, if necessary and practical, yet another room might be added on for supplies and storage, canning from the garden, preserves, winter vegetables and wood would be stored for the fireplace.
This was the home of a sea captain. When he was home, especially during the long winter, it’s where he taught his sons the pleasure of creating ship models and sailboats for summer fun. He also taught them the joy of sharing and developing their talent with all who came by. He would tell his stories as he sat in the rocking chair with the odor of cinnamon in the air – no doubt there was a pie baking in the big old stove. It might have been his father’s and his grandfather’s home, passed down from one generation to another. You can find similar homes in many other places but this one is a “New England Classic.”
