“The background is taken from Pier 36 in San Francisco. I was with a friend who said he would love to have a painting of that sign it only was ‘Pier 63’, since that was the year he graduated from high school. I told him I would do a very large painting for him and move the numbers around. This watercolour is the preliminary watercolour study. He’s also a big wine drinker.”
