"I
paint for the love of dogs the many emotions they share.
Some paintings are deeper emotional metaphors than
others, but my hope is that they each capture the joy
and encouragement of their faithful subjects. I’m truly
blessed to be able to paint every day, and am thrilled
to share my enjoyment with others through my work"
-John Weiss
John
Weiss was born and reared in Akron, Ohio, the son of a draftsman with
whom he credits his disciplined approach to art. As a child, Weiss
always had the ability to draw. He developed his innate skill through
high school art classes. On a trip to Maine, he encountered an
exhibition of work by Andrew Wyeth, an experience that further
stimulated his own desire to be an artist. He studied art at Kent State
University, but left after two years to go into the landscape business.
The attractions of art had become too much a part of him by this time,
however, and he returned to drawing and painting - on a casual basis at
first, but with more time and intensity as four years passed.
Hand-in-glove with experience goes perseverance. His dedication paid
off, and in 1977 Weiss began painting full-time, primarily in oil. Today
a resident of Ohio, Weiss uses his art to support worthy causes in the
area, and shows his work in a number of galleries nationwide.

Lori and John Weiss
appreciate The Gift first-hand. Through the grace of God,
personal determination and the discovery, diagnosis and treatment her
breast cancer at a facility like the Jean B and Milton N Cooper Cancer
Center in Akron OH, Lori can count herself amongst the ever growing
number of strong, joyful, and appreciative women who’s gift of life has
been renewed.
“The Gift celebrates the purpose and promise of cancer
treatment and recovery - the opportunity to enjoy the gifts of life,
hope, family, friendship and another tomorrow,” John Weiss says. ”This
journey is one full of anxiety and fear, but when you to have the faith
in your strength to take it on, to face down the storm, you will realize
that there is a bright horizon and new shoreline on other side.”

As artist John Weiss remarked,
“There’s nothing like sitting by the fire with your loyal dog curled up
at your feet for a real sense that all is right with the world.”
". . .
A heartbeat at my feet,” is how novelist Edith Wharton described her
dog. "A Feeling of Warmth" is the perfect portrayal of both sentiments
but we can also identify with this Golden, warming his back now and, in
a little while, rising and turning to spread his belly along the heat of
the fire.
“Did
you ever notice that Goldens can lie in the snow with their faces
buried, yet they never seem to get cold?” asks the artist. “Then they
come into the house and lie so close to the flames you’d think they
could catch fire. Extreme temperatures don’t seem to affect them much.”
To paraphrase Charles M. Schulz, happiness is this warm puppy and this
Anniversary Edition in your home will warm your long winter nights.

Weiss has displayed his
affection for the breed through several Greenwich Workshop Fine Art
Editions including "A Feeling of Warmth," "Let’s Play" and "Best Loved
Breeds: Golden Retriever" all in low inventory. “Artistically, my goal
was to capture the beautiful golden puppy coat with the use of oil
paint. I also wanted to set up some interaction between the puppies,
each with a unique expression and personality."
“In my estimation,
the Golden Retriever is one of the most beautiful of the sporting
breeds,” says noted canine portrait artist John Weiss. “Not only are
they known for their beauty, but also for their intelligence and
wonderful temperament. These puppies are no exception, being bred from a
very fine line of champions and their future looks very rosy.” Make
someone else’s future rosy with a gift of this darling trio. Contact

Artist John Weiss is
famous for his dog portraits so if you did a double-take when you read
the name of "Cuddle Time’s" creator, you won’t be alone. “But horses and
dogs go together,” says the artist. “It’s a natural connection. Horses
are beautiful and intriguing animals. They are fascinating to me-the way
their coats and musculature appear. There is a nationally renowned
stable near me in Ohio where at least 15 new foals appear each spring.
And every year, people in the region make it a tradition to drive by to
watch the babies play in the fields.” This mare and foal are reminiscent
of every mother and baby, the perfect portrait of spring that will put a
smile on the horse lovers in your life.

Dogs are man’s best
friend but dogs’ best friend may be John Weiss, who has immortalized
them with artistry and sensitivity in Greenwich Workshop Fine Art
Editions for nearly thirty years. The Anniversary Edition No Swimming
Lessons Today features one of Weiss’ beloved breeds and most popular.
Nearly all his Lab editions are in low inventory or Sold Out at
Publisher.
“The Labrador
retriever is a very powerful swimmer,” he says, “known for recovery work
in all kinds of water conditions including extreme cold. They were
originally bred to work alongside fisherman, helping to pull in nets and
catch fish. Eventually they were cross-bred with other breeds such as
setters and spaniels and what we know as a Lab today became a prized
game retriever for hunters, and has a famously even temperament.”
The setting for this
painting is Marblehead on Lake Erie. “There’s a beautiful lighthouse and
rocks that overlook the lake,” Weiss explains, “but every time there’s a
nor’easter, you get tremendous waves coming in. Mom was going to take
the pup in for a lesson, but the waves are too big, so there are no
swimming lessons today.”

These are a few of artist John Weiss’ favorite
things . . . Black Labradors, that is. Weiss is one of the country's most
sought-after dog portrait artists because of his ability to capture the
personality of both the breed and the exemplar in each dog portrait he
creates. His paintings of dogs and of horses have an avid and loyal
following. “Word of mouth has resulted in my works being sold all over the
world,” he says. “There was even one portrait of a dog that was presented to
Queen Elizabeth by Lady Barlow.”
“Expression is very important and unique to each breed and I wanted to
represent a range of expressions with this tiny trio,” he says of the
siblings in Lab Puppies. “These pups are typically very curious about their
surroundings. It’s a big world out there and they’re already sniffing it
out.”

John Weiss has a gift for capturing the most
precious moments, ones that resonate with us all. In From the Heart, the
artist’s granddaughter innocently shares an ice cream cone with an old
friend. The golden summer sunlight lends the companions a warm glow as they
enjoy the simple pleasures life has brought them. From the Heart is truly a
painting that will touch each of us.

Nothing warms the heart like watching a dog romp
in the snow. This image continues John’s informal series of prints (most
sold out at the publisher) that celebrate the special bond between dogs and
people. John’s models for these portraits have been his own dogs in the
familiar company of friends and neighbors. The model for Cold Nose, Warm
Heart is Maggie, the artist’s golden Lab, whom you may remember from the
popular release New Friends. Maggie is definitely bonding with someone
here—someone who’s missing a red scarf!

“The challenge of this painting was placing a
pair of black Labrador retrievers in such a dark area. The goal was to
capture the glow of the fire, so, it was necessary for everything else
in the composition to be rather muted. When you look into the shadows,
you discover clues about your surroundings. The softness of the light
enhances the coziness and character of the historic structure. I wanted
to capture how walking into this room was like walking into a novel, an
escape into another world.”

Is
someone being taught to “fetch?” or, is someone being taught to “throw?” If
you think about it, everything we understand about training something is in
play. A behaviour not genetically inherent to our survival is being impressed
upon us through the will of another. We receive positive reinforcement for
engaging in the behaviour which encourages us to repeat it again and again.
Even if we initiate the behaviour, we generally do not stop until the canine
has decided the behaviour is complete. Heck, we’ll even fight over the stick
just to get the chance to throw it again!
If the
reward is a lifetime of loyalty and companionship, then this submission to
another’s will is a glorious one. John Weiss has no equal when it comes to
capturing this bond between man and dog. From capturing the mischievous
gleam in a puppy’s eye to the long walks in the woods with your companion at
your side, Weiss’ art constantly reminds us, Does It Get any Better Than
This?

Seated before a
blazing fire, a fisherman recounts tales of his fishing prowess to an awed
boy and his captivated beagle. The heat of the fire and the excitement of
his grandfather's adventure have brought a flush to the boy's cheeks as he
watches the legendary fish grow in size. Their companionship and love create
a warmth that floods beyond the walls of the shelter, casting a golden glow
on the snowy ground and surrounding woods.

“I
enjoy painting animals to which people can relate,” says John Weiss. “They
are a familiar, part of our everyday life we understand and enjoy. While
searching through reference materials, I came across an image of a friend’s
Chocolate Labrador. They’re amazing little creatures during their puppy stage
and I tried to capture that special time in their lives by going for a
natural look that makes you feel you can reach out and pet the dog.”Weiss
has accomplished just that in this warm and charming portrait.

"Strength, comfort and encouragement are always within reach," is the
message behind John Weiss' art. One of the artist's favorite themes,
companionship, is beautifully realized in his latest release. By carefully
combining colors and composition, Weiss creates an image that perfectly
conveys a tender moment in time and evokes our own emotional connection. We
see that the dog forms part of this circle of love. "People and their pets
form an emotional bond that time and adversity can never breach," says
Weiss.

One
evening, while on the Turkey Foot Lake in Akron, Ohio, artist John Weiss saw
a small family on their boat and the scene resonated with him. Musing on the
subject of family relationships and childhood memories, he went back to the
time his own father rented a row boat and took his brother and John fishing.
The result of this inspiration is Preparing for the Feast, a wonderfully
backlit image of a father and son fishing with their faithful golden
retriever.

“Whether a small mixed terrier in an
apartment, or a highly-trained working shepherd, dogs are instinctively
protective and bent on being our guardians. I have always wanted to explore
this theme in my artwork,” says renowned artist John Weiss. “The other
inspiration for this painting was one of my favorite escapes, the Marble
Head Lighthouse itself. For over 30 years, this spot has been a place of
comfort for me. ''

During the Civil War, dogs served as troop
mascots, demonstrating bravery and loyalty in camp and on the battlefield.
These mascots were an inspiration, bringing about unity while representing
beloved pets at home. For soldiers, the act of nurturing offset boredom in
camp, and the dogs would enjoy a charmed life lavished with affection. In
Weiss’ powerful image, this Pyrenees provides much needed sanctuary to a
young soldier who has undoubtedly witnessed the many horrors of war.

In the dog show circuit, to
“finish a champion” is to reach the pinnacle of winning, meaning that the
dog has earned enough points to be given such a title. The German Shepherd
in John’s latest painting is such a champ, with an ancient K-9 look of regal
bearing and beauty. Originally bred at the start of the 20th century for
herding and protection, the shepherd has proven to function in so many ways.
From police dog to Rin Tin Tin to cherished best
friend, John reminds us that every dog is indeed a champion.

"When early
morning temperatures sink lower then that of the water of Portage Lake,
the fog creates one of nature's most captivating moods. And it is
out of this fog that the Black Labrador greets this pair of men in their
bass boat."

“One of the
real thrills of my year was the chance to take my dad fishing,” John said
when asked about the inspiration for his latest piece. “My father and I
went down to Portage Lakes at Dusty’s Marina, where I keep my boat, and I
got him an old-fashioning fishing cane pole. We hadn’t been fishing in
years, and the sight of him fishing on the dock was an inspiration. We are
so blessed to spend time with loved ones, and it was a real joy to spend
this time with him. For the record, he caught more fish than I did.”

pencil sketch of the adult and a title card.
Poodles are among the top 10 most popular
breeds in America and are the national dog of France. The Standard
Poodle is the oldest and largest of the three varieties (including
Miniature and Toy). The breed is admired for its active and intelligent
nature and its elegant appearance. Perhaps you'll be surprised as we
were to learn that poodle's hairstyles originate from their work as retrievers.

''Strength, comfort and encouragement are
always within reach is the message behind John Weiss’ Facing the Storms
series. We may not always be aware of the form in which they present
themselves, but the means by which we confront life’s challenges are all
around us. John, who leads grief support groups when he is not painting,
believes that dogs are not the only beings capable of giving so much for
seemingly so little in return. He often chooses to represent family, friends
and faith in the simple form of man’s best friend. With this painting he is
saying that we don’t have to be in the midst of great turmoil to realize
that we are not alone. The key lay in recognizing the wag of a tail for what
it is. ''

True Companions is an homage to his
Labrador retriever, Maggie. Though John does not paint himself into his own
work, we are observing a common occurrence in his own backyard. While the
two seem to be basking in the warmth and amber glow of the evening’s fire,
is it possible that something else deflects the night’s chill? In the
company of his steadfast companion, a moment that could be considered full
of loneliness becomes one of magic.

Weiss isn't telling...''
